The school year of 2020-2021 was an interesting challenge for the entire Missouri S&T campus. Many student organizations, including our own, had to answer many unexpected yet pertinent questions: How do we distribute food without touching it? What does hands-on service look like with social
distancing in place? How can we make virtual gatherings more engaging? Though it took a lot of brainstorming and exibility on everyone’s part, the members of Gamma Theta remained active and continued to make a positive impact on the wider community.

Social Events Reunite ECE Members

Snacks were offered to students during the Founder’s Day Celebration

After having to leave campus during the spring of 2020, many of HKN’s members yearned to mingle with their peers again. In order to keep everyone safe, some of our usual in-person events, such as general meetings and video game socials, remained online through Zoom. By doing this, we were able to remain accessible to a greater number of students. Fortunately, some of our events were able to resume in-person operation. Our Founder’s Day celebration, for example, was able to adapt by offering individually-wrapped snacks to students passing by in the EE building. Another event, the IEEE / HKN joint picnic, took place outside with masks and adequate social distancing.

Service Returns in Full Swing

One of our chapter’s biggest accomplishments this year was maintaining and improving our service opportunities, especially in the spring. Our members worked with many individuals and organizations from around the Rolla community. These included the KC Math Relay, the Newburg Children’s Museum, Grace Food Distribution, and some of our very own alumni. Members also ran workshops and hosted study sessions for higher-level ECE courses.

Welcoming New Members

Of course, no semester or school year would be complete without our inductions. Though the event was held remotely, pledges still got dressed up for the very important event. In the fall, six students – five undergraduate and one graduate – were inducted. In the spring, seven undergraduate students were inducted along with five professional members.
